State House on Main Street was built in the nineteenth century as the residence of the governors of British Guiana and became the official residence of the President after independence. It is a large timber mansion in gardens, with its main façade on Main Street and grounds bordering New Market and Carmichael Streets. The National Trust lists it as a national monument. It is not open to the public, but the house and gardens can be seen from Main Street.
