St George's Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Diocese of Guyana and the best-known building in Georgetown. It is built of local greenheart and other hardwoods and rises to about 43.5 metres (143 feet), which places it among the tallest wooden buildings in the world.

The present cathedral was designed by the English architect Sir Arthur Blomfield. Its foundation stone was laid in 1889 and the building was consecrated in 1894, replacing earlier churches on and near the site that went back to the 1790s. Inside, the long nave and the timber vaulting are the thing to see, along with the stained glass and the memorials to the colony's early history.

It is a working cathedral, so visiting hours give way to services. The National Trust lists it as a national monument. City Hall, the National Museum and the Non-Aligned Monument are all within a few minutes' walk.
