Georgetown's City Hall stands at the corner of Regent Street and the Avenue of the Republic. It was designed by Father Ignatius Scoles, a Jesuit priest and architect, and completed in 1889. It is built almost entirely of wood in the Gothic Revival style, with a central tower, steep roofs and tall pointed windows, and it is often described as one of the finest wooden buildings in the Caribbean.
It houses the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown. In 1995 the Government of Guyana placed it on the country's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, where it remains.
The building has suffered from age and weather and has been the subject of restoration appeals for many years, so parts of it may be fenced or under repair when you visit. St George's Cathedral is a five-minute walk north, and Stabroek Market the same distance south.
