The Public Buildings, as the Parliament Building is formally known, face the Avenue of the Republic at Brickdam, beside Stabroek Market. Designed by Joseph Hadfield and completed in 1834, the building is neoclassical in style, with a central dome, a colonnade and a grand staircase.
It was built to house the colony's government and courts and has been the seat of the legislature ever since; today it is home to the National Assembly of Guyana. The ceremonial opening of Parliament and the swearing-in of presidents have taken place here.
The grounds hold a number of monuments and memorials. Visitors can view the building from the Avenue of the Republic at any time; the chamber itself is open only by arrangement with the Parliament Office, and sittings can be watched from the public gallery.
